I absolutely adore conversations that are all emoticons! Only because I have learned to deliberately mess up emoticons and addle the hipsters to … ooer … high emotion! Whether I read or assign weird and unexpected meanings to well known emojis, whether I play EmotiIgnorant or QuantumEmotiNinja, it is always fun to take the fight to those who insist emoticons are legit or even acceptable communication.
Both the young tykes with parent funded devices and data-plans as well as the allegedly hip who must follow stupid trends are lovable in their own right. And I empathize with the unfortunate EmotiChallengedRelatives who try so desperately to contend with these inanities. However, which one of the former two are actually think they can capture entire lexicons or the nuanced understandings of the human condition … constructed over thousands of generations … in hieroglyphics? Do they actually think they are inventing a cool new language? Do they understand their desperate need for fun and alleged uniqueness is actually regressive?
Maybe that is a bit harsh. After all, I definitely admire the emoticon for “duh” … for its uncanny ability to convey itself and faithfully represent its wielders:
