Dubai Denies David’s …

This time I will start with the disclaimer: I love Dubai. I adore their architecture. Every time I have visited I have felt transported. There is always a delicious sense of the exotic. I admire this land of unimaginable riches and envy its casual opulence. The people are wonderful, hospitable, have a sense of humor and seem absolutely reasonable.

It is only having said all that I ask the following questions based on the below news article:

A 3D printed copy of Michelangelo’s iconic David sculpture is currently on display at the Dubai Expo — or some of it is anyway. Parts of the statue deemed inappropriate for public viewing. Concerned about offending conservative Muslims, Expo organizers fretted over how to display the naked figure. “We even thought of putting undergarments on the statue, or changing it all together, but it was too late,” one staff member told Italian newspaper La Repubblica. “We understood too late that it was an error to bring a statue of a nude man to the Emirates.” The team finally settled on the decision to block the warrior’s private parts from view completely.

I suspect actual Dubai residents do not particularly resent nudity … at least not in museum pieces … so I am not even sure who I am addressing these questions to. Perhaps just the people who made the above consideration for Dubai sensibilities :)
