#CareerAdviceForWomen: Three Ideas … From A Man
Could a guy say anything relevant about building women’s careers? He could tell you what men do to build careers. He could tell you what parts of career building are gender agnostic. At the very least, he could probably tell you what is missing. As an investor in Innovation Women, the idea of advancing women in their careers is definitely of high value to me. So, hear me out … as I mansplain how any woman may advance her career :)
If for a second you set aside the two unpleasant ideas — men only promote other men and men get things by thumping the table, the following three core moves will help any #careermindedwomen:
- set aggressive goals
- display value without giving offence
- build network to support your goals
Adept career builders use these moves whether they are male or female.
Aggressive goals: No one I know got anywhere substantial by merely being lucky, or waiting to be worthy of the position. Just the sheer number of steps to get anywhere high is a long and daunting process. They did not get there by waiting to be nominated either. They all set goals and self nominated.
